Letters and documents re: the founding of Hillsboro Academy, including Springer's inaugural address in 1850 and Illinois State University at Springfield. Photocopy of diary kept while at Fort Smith with essays on the the plight of war on civilians and the Freedmen, and ledger from the orphan asylum. Ninety letters discussing affairs at Carthage College, 1871-1887, and a notebook of endowments, 1871-1874. Record book for marriages, baptisms and sermons, 1839-1842, 1845-1850. One-hundred ten letters re: moving Hillsboro Academy to Springfield and the problems involved. Includes letters from Illinois ministers: Ephraim Miller; Daniel Scherer; Daniel Jenkins; George Krack; and William Hunderdosse. A number of letters from Simeon Harkey a Maryland minister who came to Illinois and solicited donations for the Academy from in Maryland, Pennsylvania and in Springfield.

Springfield, Illinois Lutheran minister, educator, school principle, Civil War chaplain and a founder of Carthage College. Founded first Lutheran church in Springfield, served as president of Hillsboro Academy and Illinois State University at Springfield and as chaplain with the 10th Illinois Infantry and First Arkansas Infantry at Fort Smith where he helped develop the Arkansas Asylum, a home for war orphans, and with the Freedmen.
